This fine piece of common land two miles south of Chelmsford is a typical common in its irregular shape, including several enclaves containing buildings, and in the many pits and depressions caused, no doubt, by commoners digging out gravel in the past.
It packs a great variety of habitats into a relatively small space. These include lowland heath with ponds, mire, marsh, grassland, bracken-covered areas and woodland.
Unusual plants growing here include star sedge, lesser skullcap and heath spotted orchid.
Visiting
Leave the A12 at its junction with the B1007 and turn north towards Galleywood and Chelmsford. The main part of the common lies alongside the B1007 immediately north of the A12. SatNav: CM2 8JS.
Buses from Chelmsford to Basildon, Billericay and Wickford run down the B1007 past the common.
Accessible at all times.
